Letter: Seek fairness in taxation

While reading the Sept. 24 story “Madore proposes property tax cut: 2% drop would lead to $1.2 million less in county revenue,” I couldn’t help but think that Clark County Councilor David Madore is on the right track, but in the wrong direction. My property taxes have gone up almost $2,000 in the eight years I have lived in Clark County, and they are on the way to forcing me to move. I have two young girls in school and myself and my wife. I have my own septic and well and live on a private road that we have to maintain. If anything, I burden the county less than most, but yet pay higher than most at a rate of $6,128 for 2014. It is becoming ridiculous.

I believe a lot of folks are in the same situation. I also believe in fairness of taxation that the taxes should be levied in a different manner than they are now, like on how many bedrooms you have, or if you’re on a private or maintained road, etc. Many people would receive a tax cut and some would pay more but it would be fair. I believe this is more to the point of what Madore should be seeking. This would be a fantastic investigative reporting opportunity for The Columbian.
