Avakian running for Oregon secretary of state

PORTLAND — Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian says he’s running for Oregon secretary of state.

The Democrat was expected to seek the office, and he made it official Tuesday.

He’s the third Democrat to enter the race, joining state Sen. Richard Devlin and state Rep. Val Hoyle.

The secretary of state is the second-highest elected office in Oregon, and first in line to be governor if the chief executive steps down. That’s what happened in February, when Kate Brown took over for John Kitzhaber.

Avakian has been Oregon’s labor commissioner since 2008. He’s perhaps best known for ruling that a Gresham bakery must pay damages because it refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple.
