College notebook: Hampton makes early splash for ASU tennis

Arizona State University freshman Sammi Hampton won her first collegiate tennis match over the weekend.

The four-time state singles champion at Skyview High School reached the quarterfinals of the Cal Nike Invitational at Berkeley, Calif.

She won her first match over seventh-seeded Jana McCord of Saint Mary’s 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, and then beat Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

In the quarterfinals, Hampton fell to top-seed Maegan Manasse of California 6-2, 6-0.

Hampton and Kassidy Jump reached the semifinals in doubles for ASU. They were beaten by top-seed Manasse and Denise Starr 8-4.

Eckler goal sparks Concordia to shutout

Concordia University junior Bobbi Eckler scored seconds before the 20-minute mark as the Cavaliers won 2-0 at Western Oregon on Tuesday.

The Union High School graduate scored after the Wolves’ goalkeeper allowed a rebound on a free kick as Concordia (7-1-2, 4-0-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) went atop the conference standings in their first season in the NCAA Division II GNAC. The Cavaliers have won six shutouts.
