Letter: Results require action

Albert Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.” I’d like to tweak that though a bit: The definition of insanity is doing nothing and expecting results.

Our country has experienced yet another mass shooting, this one at a community college in Roseburg, Ore. And an all-too-familiar scenario has resurfaced as a gunman took his brand of insanity to school to slaughter and maim unarmed innocents. As citizens, we are outraged and horrified by the senselessness of these killings. Giving his 15th such press conference, President Obama emotionally expressed his frustration that “Somehow this has become routine.”

There is a growing impatience with a political system that cannot — will not — allow even modest changes to the nation’s gun laws. The gun lobby has handcuffed and paralyzed our lawmakers into inaction. Sadly, we know that another shooting will happen again. Nothing will be done in Washington, D.C., and it will produce the same results.
