Battle Ground — Battle Ground schools exceeded state goals for proficiency in English literacy by students in the English as a Second Language program, as determined by the most recent Washington English Language Proficiency Exam.

In the district, 80.8 percent of students made progress toward English literacy, where as 77.9 percent of students around the state showed progress.

In Battle Ground, 21.3 percent of students attained English language proficiency, compared to 16.7 percent of students across the state. Proficiency means that the student reads, writes, speaks and comprehends English in academic classroom settings.

“Our goal is to help them reach English language proficiency without missing content knowledge,” Glenna Ainley, the district’s ESL program coordinator, said in a release from the district. “We have found a formula of classroom support and language development intervention that helps our kids successfully attain English proficiency and find academic success, as well.”
