FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — An SUV driven by an elderly man careened through a Massachusetts auto auction Friday, striking other cars, patrons and a cinder block wall and injuring eight people, police said.

The chaos unfolded around 10 a.m. inside ADESA Boston, an expansive facility in Framingham where manufacturers, lenders, insurance companies and others sell off vehicles.

Framingham police Lt. Stephen Cronin said none of the injuries was considered life-threatening, including those suffered by one person who was airlifted to a hospital for treatment after becoming stuck beneath the SUV.

Police said the man behind the wheel was a 78-year-old contract driver for the auction.

“He was visibly shaken,” police Lt. Harry Wareham said.

Cronin said the man drove through an auction lane inside the building, struck five cars and several people before crashing into the wall — which fell on the man who was taken from the scene by helicopter.

No charges have been filed.

Mike Caggiano, executive vice president of U.S. operations for ADESA, said the auction was suspended while authorities cleared the scene and investigated.
