Yes, he may reside in Barcelona, Spain, but, as indicated in the marvelous piece published Oct. 4 “Maestro’s orchestra his home away from home,” Vancouver Symphony Maestro Salvador Brotons is a community treasure.
This wonderful music-maker commutes from his European home several times each year to rehearse and conduct the orchestra that he has built here, and has done so for the past quarter-century. Incredibly, the maestro concluded the two weekend concerts (performed in Skyview High School’s acoustically superb auditorium) with Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” a technically difficult piece, without need of the score in front of him.
A charming man who I’ve gotten to know well over the years, Brotons oozes music. We in Vancouver and, indeed, in all of Clark County (and Portland, too) are lucky to have Brotons visit us regularly.
