Letter: Two topics often debated

Guns: Folks, hand guns and assault rifles, besides target practice, are designed to kill people. While I believe in self-defense, the proper authorities need to shut down — except for sport hunting rifles — firearm gun sources, gun shows, and gun-related online sales to save lives and restore sanity in America. Most people in civilized countries, in general, think Americans are rubes for tolerating an armed-to-the-teeth, lunatic gun culture. How about a new bumper sticker? People kill guns.

War: Most prudent expert military minds, like General Eisenhower, abhorred war and attempted to keep the United States out of unnecessary proactive military engagements. In retrospect, were there some alternatives to the Normandy landing where thousands of troops were killed? Was President Truman’s choice ethically justified dropping the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima? There are no simple answers to these dilemmas. Everybody has to draw their own conclusions on the veracity and necessity of Vietnam and the Middle East.

In light of that, I cannot thank and respect enough the military personnel who are fighting and have fought for our country. To those who have died, I honor and thank you and your families posthumously for your supreme sacrifice.
