An Alaska Airlines flight from Newark, N.J., to Seattle early Monday morning was diverted to Buffalo, N.Y., after a credit-card reader began to smoke in the plane’s cabin.
“There were no flames,” said Nancy Trott, a spokeswoman for Alaska Airlines. “The flight crew used a fire extinguisher to stop the device from smoking while the captain made flight emergency arrangements.”
There were no injuries to the 181 passengers and six crew members aboard Flight 17, a Boeing 737-900.
The fire extinguishers will need to be replaced before the flight can proceed to Seattle, Trott said.
Fire officials will keep the credit-card reader for evaluation.
