BEND, Ore. — Deschutes County has released video from former Gov. John Kitzhaber’s trip to a Bend landfill shortly after his February resignation.

Kitzhaber left office amid allegations that his fiancee, Cylvia Hayes, used her relationship with him to win contracts for her business.

Landfill employees called authorities when the couple arrived to make a drop-off, concerned they might be trying to dump evidence.

The Bend Bulletin made a public records request in February for the surveillance video and received it this month.

According to the newspaper, the video shows Kitzhaber and Hayes unloading campaign yard signs, a mattress pad and what appears to be a box spring.

A second video shows investigators combing through the junk.

“In February (the FBI) provided us with direction to not release it,” Doyle said Friday.

He said when the newspaper renewed its request for information, “recently I got a hold of them and said, ‘Is there still an investigation or am I able to release it to them?’ ”

“That led to (the FBI saying) ‘Yeah, you can release it,’ ” Doyle added.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Portland declined comment on the ongoing investigation.

The state held off on its own investigation into the controversy in February. Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum spokeswoman Kristina Edmunson says the state will not pursue its own investigation until the federal probe concludes.
