Washougal — With the Gold Rush Fire raging in nearby Skamania County, firefighters were staged at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary and Canyon Creek Middle schools, and a few Washougal Sodexo employees came in over the summer to help feed the firefighters.

Sodexo recently honored the five employees: Mark Jasper, Sodexo general manager at Washougal School District, Nancy Sonneson from Washougal High School, Cheryl Bastian from Jemtegaard Middle School, Molly Krabbenhoft from Hathaway Elementary School and Trudi Jones from Gause Elementary School.

The group worked in teams of two and gave coverage to firefighters from 4:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. for more than a week.

Since school was out for the summer, the kitchens weren’t stocked, so Jasper called Sodexo for emergency food deliveries and started making calls to workers to see who could come in. They also received donations from the community.

“I was amazed at how fast everyone was ready to answer the need for help,” Jasper said in a release from the school district. “These were people willing to give up their last week of summer vacation.”
