Letter: Contrast in funding regrettable

By Mike Spence, Vancouver

The contrast between the two columns on The Columbian’s Oct. 17 Page C1 was striking.

On one side, Editor Lou Brancaccio’s column reminded us how much David Madore was spending on his campaign to elect a write-in candidate for County Council chair — $300,000 here, plus $500,000 there — plus several thousands of dollars for other campaigns and pretty soon you’re talking about some big bucks.

On the other side of the same page, the Vancouver Symphony was waxing poetic about raising $140,000 at their annual fundraising gala and at the same time bemoaning the fact that they don’t have anyone stepping up with enough funds to help create a sorely-needed endowment.

I’m neither a politician nor someone with lots of disposable dollars, so I don’t relate. However, I’m pretty sure that Madore’s ego prods him to attempt to be king frog in the Clark County pond. It’s sad that he hasn’t looked at spending all those dollars usefully elsewhere.

I’ll bet, with a large enough donation, the Vancouver Symphony would save a couple of front row seats (over on the far right, of course) for the good councilor. Before each concert, they could let him stand and wave graciously as we applaud his generosity. Problems solved: Madore’s ego gratified and the symphony provided a financial foundation. And maybe the rest of us would be spared all this election silliness.
