Vancouver police are investigating after an elderly couple suffered what appeared to be minor injuries from a crash, then died days later from blunt force trauma.

On Aug. 5, Kenneth Hart, 83, was driving south on Northeast 164th Avenue and turned left onto Mill Plain Boulevard, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said. At the intersection, a vehicle driving north on 164th Avenue crashed into Hart’s vehicle, Kapp said.

Kenneth Hart and his wife Sarah Hart, 81, weren’t seriously injured, according to the report, but were taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

Kenneth Hart was released from the hospital to go home, but died in hospice on Aug. 10; Sarah Hart never left the hospital and died on Aug. 16, Kapp said.

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that they died of blunt force injuries, and police were notified.

Detectives with the agency’s traffic unit have since been investigating the circumstances of the crash, including which vehicles had the right of way.
