DODSON, Ore. — A celebration of the 100th anniversary of the dedication of Multnomah and Wahkeena falls as a public park will begin at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Multnomah Falls Lodge plaza.

Officials of the Friends of Multnomah Falls, Portland Parks and Recreation, Multnomah Falls Lodge Co., Multnomah County and the U.S. Forest Service will reenact the 1915 dedication.

In 1915, Simon Benson provided $5,250 to the City of Portland to buy land at Multnomah Falls and combine it with land he had purchased at Wahkeena Falls.

The area became Benson Park. Over time, the falls became part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Benson’s great-grandson will be at the reenactment.
