Letter: Port should rethink mission

By Charles Gretsch, Vancouver

The Port of Vancouver commission vs. Gramor Development. This is an unusual situation. The Sept. 9 story reported “Elbows are thrown over waterfront.” We have a government entity, engaged in the purchase, development and sale of real property, in competition with a private sector entity similarly engaged. To me that sounds like socialism vs. capitalism, which, since we have a capitalistic system, is wrong.

The port seeks to justify its activity on the grounds that it is good for the community. I think that if they were sincerely concerned with the welfare of the community, they would not have entered into the deal for the oil terminal with Tesoro-Savage. It may be time to rethink the mission of the port commission.
