Rep. Liz Pike files write-in candidacy for county chair

Rep. Liz Pike, R-Camas, filed Friday afternoon as a write-in candidate for Clark County council chair.

Pike’s write-in candidacy, which was endorsed by the Clark County Republican Party last month, challenges Marc Boldt, no party preference, and Mike Dalesandro, a Democrat, for the top council seat.

“I’m very grateful to receive the official Clark County Republican Party endorsement for county chair,’’ Pike said in a news release. “I appreciate the trust and confidence placed in me by this grass roots volunteer organization.”

Supporters of the campaign say it ensures that Republican voters have a conservative alternative to the other two candidates.

Vancouver poised to ban fireworks

The entire Vancouver City Council wants to ban personal fireworks starting in 2017, and it will formally vote later this year to change the city’s fireworks ordinance.

But informally, the outcome already seems clear, given the council’s unanimous, vocal opposition at Monday evening’s workshop to the sale and use of fireworks.

“I’m just going to say it right now. … I think it’s time the community moves to a ban of fireworks,” said Mayor Tim Leavitt, echoed by four other councilors who favored a ban by council vote.

Councilors Alishia Topper and Bart Hansen both said they supported banning fireworks but felt a citizens’ advisory vote was needed so everyone’s voices are heard.

Woman in court after allegedly firing deputy’s gun during traffic stop

Vancouver woman who allegedly reached for a deputy’s gun, causing it to fire, during a traffic stop Monday morning was acting erratically during the incident and warned officers that a tsunami was coming, according to court records.

Jessica D. Farias, 33, appeared Tuesday in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, three counts of attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, attempting to elude police, hit-and-run injury, reckless driving and resisting arrest in connection with the incident.

Farias, who was restrained in a wheelchair, blew kisses to people sitting in the gallery as an officer wheeled her into the courtroom. She wore a suicide-prevention smock, which is given to prisoners who may try to harm themselves with standard jail clothing.

Vancouver OKs overnight camping in public places

Amending a Vancouver city ordinance to allow overnight camping in public places is just a “baby step” toward solving the city’s homeless troubles and lack of shelter space, citizens told the city council Monday.

“I don’t want to see the council put a bow on our problem and make it look all pretty by providing (camping) hours when we’re not addressing the real issues,” Hough neighborhood resident Heidi Owens said.

The council unanimously voted Monday to change Vancouver’s unlawful camping ordinance to allow camping in public places from 9:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Such overnight camping previously had been a misdemeanor. The change wouldn’t affect park hours (parks close from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) or laws prohibiting disorderly conduct, drinking in public, urinating in public and other health and safety issues.

Can any team in GSHL break up ‘The Big 3’?

They are called the Big Three for a reason.

Big schools. Big programs. Big winners.

Camas. Union. Skyview.

Those three football programs have been in the same league now since 2012. Camas has won the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League title every season, with Union and Skyview earning the other two playoff spots.

The dominance started long before then, though. The last time any of the Big Three lost a league football game to anyone outside of the Big Three was in 2008.

Which leads us to the 2015 season and the opening week of 4A GSHL football.
