Weather Eye: Air behind system is chilly, so some may soon have lows in 30s

The last weekend of summer was fairly typical for this time of the year with highs in the 75- to 80-degree range, although more cloudiness today may keep us away from the 80-degree mark. The storm track is just to our north with us on the ragged end. Some of those clouds from the first weather system could be seen Saturday afternoon.

A second system swings by to our north this evening and overnight; Clark County northward could see a light shower or two into Monday. The air behind this front is chilly, and with clearing skies Monday night, we could see low-temperature readings into the 30s in the outlying areas.

High temperatures this week will be close to seasonal averages in the 70s. The next threat of rainfall is Thursday and Friday. There could be another dusting of white on the upper reaches of the Cascades. Did you see that Mount Hood had a fresh mantle of white on Friday afternoon?

The month is running 2.5 degrees below average, the coolest September since 2010. We have shifted from months of above-average temperatures back into a cooling trend. Rainfall totals 0.91 inch, about a quarter-inch below average.

August totals: Murphy Dennis, near Clark County Rifles, 2.40 inches; Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 1.32 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 2.94 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 1.13 inches; Pete Conrad near Tukes Mountain, 1.02 inches; Merle Moore, 2 miles west of Yacolt, 1.88 inches; Dave Campbell, 1 mile west of Heisson 1.11 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 0.91 inch; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 1.48 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 0.91 inch; Tom Dixon, Amboy, 2.15 inches; and Gary Collins, Brush Prairie, 1.55 inches. In Salmon Creek, I had 0.89 inch.
