Bridging the Terminal 1 project

Die-hard detractors of the Columbia River Crossing might want to take this sitting down: Even in death, the politically discordant Interstate 5 Bridge replacement project that included light rail into Vancouver is helping rearrange the city’s future development.

What’s more, the new arrangement will leave room for the CRC, or something like it, to make a comeback.

You could be forgiven for missing the latest chessboard moves. For starters, look no further than the Port of Vancouver, which backed the failed CRC as an essential reliever of traffic congestion and mover of freight.

House fire reported on Evergreen Highway in Camas

A two-alarm fire destroyed a home in west Camas this afternoon.

The fire, at 20709 S.E. Evergreen Highway, was reported about 3:45 p.m., with smoke and flames visible from state Highway 14. The two-story home was fully engulfed in flames, but firefighters were able to knock down the fire.

“It’s a total loss,” Camas-Washougal Fire Department Chief Nick Swinhart said of the building.

U-Haul celebrates Ridgefield roots as it turns 70

RIDGEFIELD — L.S. “Sam” Shoen and wife Anna Mary Carty Shoen left Los Angeles in 1945 after he got out of the Navy.

They packed everything they could fit into their 1937 Ford and, with their 3-month-old son, drove north to Portland.

Their conversations during that trip sparked a billion-dollar business empire, and the place where Anna Mary grew up — the Carty ranch in Ridgefield — became the birthplace of U-Haul.

Owner Fadul Farran, who also owns Old Town Burgers and Breakfast, has brought back the much-loved Greek and Mediterranean cuisine of Jerusalem Cafe to his new restaurant, Pita House.

Vancouver police investigate shooting, possible road rage

Vancouver police officers arrested two men Friday in connection with a shooting near East Fourth Plain Boulevard and Grand Boulevard that may have started as a case of road rage, and investigators were still putting together all the pieces of the rolling disturbance Friday evening.

The department said officers were first dispatched to the area at 11:22 a.m., where they located a victim who had several bullet holes in his vehicle.

A short time later, officers located a suspect vehicle on the 2200 block of Neals Lane, off Fourth Plain, and detained several people riding in the vehicle for questioning.
