A man robbed a clerk at gunpoint at the Quality Inn & Suites in Salmon Creek on Thursday after walking in and asking the woman to make change.

Clark County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chad Rothenberger said the man entered the hotel before 6:45 p.m., then started a conversation with the clerk.

The man — described as white, in his 40s, with a medium build and about 5 feet 10 inches tall and wearing a black cowboy hat, blue button-up shirt and blue jeans — then asked the woman if she could break a larger bill for change. When she had the till open, he pulled a small-caliber handgun and demanded she hand over the cash, Rothenberger said. The clerk handed it over and the man left on foot, reportedly heading south on Highway 99, Rothenberger said.

No one was injured, Rothenberger said, and police are searching for the suspect. Officers attempted to track the man with a police dog but were unsuccessful. Rothenberger said the business’s surveillance system caught the incident on video.
