Letter: Oil terminal not worth the risks

We urge the Port of Vancouver commissioners to terminate the oil terminal lease with Tesoro-Savage on or before Aug. 1.

Tesoro-Savage has been less than forthcoming with information in the evaluation-discovery process. It seems to have something to hide. Tesoro, in particular, has a poor safety record and would present a huge liability if it were to operate a transfer facility in Vancouver.

Oil by rail poses hazards that can be catastrophic, and the risks cannot be fully mitigated. Every train derailment and wreck seems to uncover a number of maintenance issues that the rail companies are unwilling to proactively address. They fight regulations that would make rail transport safer.

Please do not allow the despoiling of this beautiful Northwest environment for empty promises of jobs, safety and revenue. Vancouver can do much better.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
