Notable: Injuries continue to be the story for Portland. Right back Alvas Powell (wrist) will be out up to eight weeks. It could be an opportunity for Taylor Peay, who appeared in five MLS games last season (three starts). … Darlington Nagbe returned to training Friday, five days after an ankle injury that at first appeared serious. Coach Caleb Porter said Nagbe is unlikely to play Saturday. … This is the third match in seven days for Portland, and third in eight days for San Jose, which won 2-0 at home over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday. … The Earthquakes beat the Timbers 2-1 on March 12 in Santa Clara, their first win over the Timbers since 2013. Chris Wondolowski scored one of his league-leading five goals in that match and Quincy Amarikwa scored from long distance just before halftime. Portland defender Nat Borchers said Wondolowski and Amarikwa (three assists) have developed a good chemistry and challenge defenses with their movement off the ball.
“As an 11 we’re going to have to be sharp,” Borchers said. “Can’t allow easy service and can’t allow easy runs in the box.”
