People gathered Sunday afternoon outside the historic Kiggins Theatre in downtown Vancouver as the movie house celebrated its 80th birthday. The theater first opened its 340-seat auditorium to moviegoers April 24, 1936, with a showing of the film “She Married Her Boss” starring Claudette Colbert and Melvyn Douglas.

The movie was shown again Sunday as part of a birthday bash that included a block party with live music and a beer garden, additional movie showings, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and prizes. Inside, the concession stand was fully stocked for the festivities. Proceeds from the event will help pay for renovations and upgrades to the theater.
