Jog-A-Dog raises funds and dogs’ spirits

East Vancouver — Ten joggers and 10 lucky shelter dogs are out running on any given Sunday, training for the upcoming Annual Run/Walk for the Animals which is May 7 this year. The dogs aren’t exactly in training, but they are more than happy to spend time outside their confines and strut their stuff to prospective adopters.

Jog-A-Dog jogging group member Jeanne Stevenson said, “It makes me feel good to help the dogs and made them more adoptable. I not only exercise the dogs, but I help them socialize and I fill out story cards for potential adopters who describe how they behaved.”

When members of the Jog-A-Dog group arrive at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington shelter, they select a dog from a list of those that have been there the longest, but they’re always allowed to choose a favorite or even take out a new dog to see how it will do.

“The best thing about this program,” Stevenson said, “is that the dogs are so happy after the run, and the worst thing is not being able to take all the dogs home with me.”

Jog-A-Dog is just one of the 35 teams raising funds for the Walk/Run which benefits the organization, and so far they have earned more than $5,000.

Registration is available online at http://hssw.org/walk-run with $35 early-bird registration fee available until May 1. The Walk/Run begins in Esther Short Park with the registration tent opening at 7:30 and a start time of 9 a.m.
