Letter: Build on greener opportunities

In an April 23 letter, “If you use oil, expect to handle it,” Tom Nelson questioned my driving a diesel pickup that I have had for 19 years and have used as little as possible. Fair question.

We often use it to take loads of tires to recycling. On the days Nelson has seen me, I was too lazy to ride my bicycle, and my shop’s electric car was being used to transport our customers. None of the oil proposed going into what would be the North America’s largest oil-by-rail terminal, next to downtown Vancouver, is designed for Vancouver customers. None.

As for looking like a “group of look-alikes,” I have met Nelson on occasion, and he and I look more alike than the opponents of the oil terminal look like either one of us. They are women, people of color, youth, and there are indeed a few old guys like Nelson and me.

Changing our personal habits, while important, will not stop the wreckage of our community and our river by a dangerous and filthy multinational oil company. Many Vancouver businesses, while trying to build a better world, are still in the process of building greener operations.

It’s not just me who is saying this. Over 100 small businesses all over Vancouver and Clark County (and across the Northwest) are standing up to Big Oil.
