‘Significant attendance’ anticipated for district caucus, convention

The Clark County Democrats are enlisting an army of volunteers to help with their legislative district caucus and convention slated for Sunday.

“We’re anticipating significant attendance,” said Mike Dalesandro, one of the event’s organizers.

Reports from disorganized and lengthy legislative district caucuses held across the state in late March had some Democrats criticizing the process and calling for a primary.

Dalesandro said the Clark County Democrats are expecting as many as 2,000 to show up and there will be at least 20 volunteers simply checking people in.

In addition to holding their legislative precinct caucuses, Clark County Democrats will host their county convention to discuss their party’s platform and hear from local candidates running for county council, state Legislature and Congress.

During the precinct-level caucuses held in March, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won the vast majority of delegates in Clark County and across Washington.

He received 78.46 percent of the vote in Clark County and 72.58 percent statewide with 95 percent of precincts reporting. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won 21.39 percent of the vote in Clark County and 27.24 percent statewide.

The 1,379 delegates chosen at the precinct caucuses will need to show up at Sunday’s event to maintain the same delegate percentage split between the two candidates.

Each candidate will once again receive a proportional number of delegates to continue a series of party events culminating in the state convention in June and the national convention in July.

Registration for the county convention and legislative district caucuses begins at 11:30 a.m., with the caucuses beginning at 1 p.m. Activities are scheduled to adjourn by about 6 p.m.

The event is at Skyview High School, 1300 N.W. 139th St.
