Letter: Deal with civility

May we please have a little more civility?

The Port of Vancouver’s oil deal has sharply divided us for three years. Depending on the governor’s decision, litigation can continue for several more years.

The Vancouver Salary Review Commission’s decision is now hotly debated. And still ahead is a possible property tax to support low-income housing.

Let’s not forget that in the rough and tumble we should “be tough on the issues and easy on the people.”

Neither port commissioners, salary commission members, or city council members signed up to be verbally abused or lose longtime friendships. While I strongly disagree with the port and the salary decisions, I believe they were made in good faith by people weighing what they believe is right for the office they hold and the public interest.

Will the decisions be reversed? I believe so, and I will do everything I can to make it so. But in the process, let’s keep emotions in check. It speaks poorly of us if we do not do so.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
