Port Angeles City Council bans profanity after ‘hell yes’

PORT ANGELES — Members of the Port Angeles City Council better watch their language.

The Peninsula Daily News reports that the council has voted to ban profanity by its members. The 6-1 vote Tuesday followed Councilman Lee Whetham’s two “hell yes” proclamations earlier this month as the council voted to temporarily discontinue fluoridation of the city’s water.

Deputy Mayor Cherie Kidd proposed the profanity ban, saying the language is inappropriate for councilors. The ban was included in 17 pages of new rules of procedure for the council.

Whetham was the sole vote against the new rules. During Tuesday’s meeting he asked Kidd whether council members would be provided a list of profane words. Kidd responded that she did not want people to “use profanity, period.”

Violations can result in councilors being called out of order, admonished, expelled from meetings or removed from council committee memberships.
