Police believe teens behind two Vancouver assaults

Police believe several teenagers are responsible for two overnight assaults in Vancouver that occurred less than a mile apart.

Officers were called to the intersection of Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard and Stapleton Road about 10:40 p.m. Monday for a man who was assaulted, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said.

The man, in his 40s, told police that several teenagers, between the ages of 16 and 18, assaulted him as he was walking home, Kapp said. The man suffered broken facial bones and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.

Officers searched the area but didn’t find anyone who matched the suspects’ description.

Less than two hours later, officers responded to another assault near the entrance to the Thunderbird Village Apartments, 4601 E. 18th St., less than a mile away from the first attack, Kapp said. That victim, also in his 40s, was not seriously injured, Kapp said, but was taken to a hospital to evaluate an eye injury.

Officers again searched but didn’t find any suspects. There were no other witnesses in either incident, Kapp said.

Police said they believe the suspects in both cases are the same, and detectives with the agency’s Safe Streets Task Force and Major Crimes Unit are investigating. The suspects include at least four teens, Kapp said, all of whom were described as wearing dark clothing, and two wore backpacks.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call the Vancouver Police Department’s tip line at 360-487-7399.
