A small brush fire scorched a hillside beside Hazel Dell Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters from the Vancouver Fire Department and Clark County Fire District 6 were called to the 5600 block of Northeast Hazel Dell Avenue around 3:30, and found a fire had kicked up in the vegetation along the east side of the roadway.

There are some structures atop the hill, but District 6 spokesman David Shmitke said the fire didn’t get threateningly close.

“That’s just down the road from us. If you’re going to have a brush fire, have one there,” he said. District 6’s Station 1 is about a mile north of the fire.

Firefighters arrived quickly and were able to wet down the blaze. He said they had the fire mostly under control within a few minutes.

Crews remained on scene for some time after to mop things up. The fire and the response delayed traffic temporarily.

Shmitke said the cause had yet to be determined.
