Letter: Protect Truth with all our powers

I fear for the life of a dear friend. She’s being assailed by sociopaths who have no scruples about lying in order to attain their ends. I’m speaking of Truth.

The plot against Truth began some years ago when Australian Rupert Murdoch moved to America and began his campaign to discredit mainstream media in order to make a place for his brand of openly biased news reportage.

Today, in the case of the Russian doping scandal, Putin is using lies to successfully lead his citizens to the belief that the fact of doping is only a case of the international community hating Russia.

Another case is the idea that Hillary Clinton is not to be trusted. I have followed three lies about her to their source. The Benghazi claims against her are unproven after years of investigation. It is a false interpretation that her attempts to gather information about Honduras as secretary of state was aiding a coup. The charge of careless email usage against her can only be justified if past secretaries of state are also charged with criminal behavior. I hear misled people being interviewed who state Clinton can’t be trusted but when pressed for specifics, they can offer only generalizations.

We’re bound to suffer if we don’t begin to protect Truth with all our powers. At the least, we shouldn’t repeat allegations without knowing what we are talking about.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
