Bagley Downs — Vancouver Public School students participated in a three-week summer program through Wind & Oar Boat School, where students built a boat from scratch. The program was funded by the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools, so it was of no cost to the students. It was open to students entering grades 7-12. The program took place in the Jim Parsley Community Center at Vancouver iTech Preparatory. The students developed woodworking skills in order to build a real, seaworthy vessel, while also learning about environmental and maritime issues. The culmination of the program was to ride the 16-foot McKenzie River Drift boat, named the S.S. Carrot, in a pool.
