Clark College men’s basketball coach Alex Kirk has stepped away from the program for the rest of the season.

“At this time, we feel it’s in the best interest of our family for me to step down as head coach of the men’s basketball team for the current season,” Kirk said in a statement released by Clark on Wednesday.

Reached Wednesday night, Kirk said he didn’t want to elaborate on the reason for his decision.

Assistant coach Kevin Johnson was named the head coach on an interim basis. Clark’s statement did not mention whether Kirk would return next season.

Kirk has a 91-30 record in four-plus seasons at Clark. The Penguins won the Northwest Athletic Conference championship in 2015 and are two-time defending NWAC South Division champions.

Clark is 3-2 this season and is scheduled to play home games Friday, Saturday and Sunday at a crossover tournament involving Tacoma, Skagit Valley and Blue Mountain.
