Save the Date: New Year’s Eve celebrations lead into more fun in 2017

With gifts to wrap and in-laws to greet, it’s easy to forget that the new year is next weekend. Here’s some events to celebrate into the new year.

Ring in 2017 with live music, dancing, sparkling cider and more during Swinging in the New Year’s Eve Dance, part of the Luepke Senior Center 50 and Better Activities. Space is limited, so call to sign up, or register in person at the community centers. The dancing runs 6:30 to 10 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Marshall Community Center, 1009 E. McLoughlin Blvd., Vancouver. Usher in the new year with the music of the 1940s during Vancouver’s Big Band New Year’s Eve from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Hilton Vancouver, 301 W. Sixth St., Vancouver. The Minidoka Swing Band will perform an evening of classic songs for dancing as ticket holders enjoy dinner, wine and a champagne toast with an early New Year’s Eve countdown at 9 p.m., timed to midnight on the East Coast. The big band event will benefit Stan Brock’s Black and Gold Northwest, which benefits wounded military veterans. It’s “Clue in Downtown Camas” as Downtown Camas Association asks visitors to find clues to solve the case of the missing cookies at participating merchants from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 6 along Northeast Fourth Avenue. Participants are encouraged to dress up inspired by Clue game suspects for extra game tickets. There will also be a screening of the film “To Catch a Thief (1955)” at the Liberty Theatre for $6. Ridgefield First Saturday will start the year with a Health and Fitness Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Ridgefield Community Center, 210 N. Main Ave., Ridgefield. Try yoga, Zumba and more while talking with fitness and wellness professionals. There will be a 1-mile walk and run taking place along the waterfront, while a more challenging 3-mile run will head from downtown Ridgefield to the Abrams Park trails. Pierce through the winter darkness with candlelight during the Evening at the Fort Lantern Tours. Spots are still open for tour at 7 p.m. Jan. 7 and Jan. 21 for visitors wanting to see Fort Vancouver at night. Explore the Counting House, Fur Store, Chief Factor’s House, Kitchen and Bake House, with costumed living history interpreters presenting historical vignettes. The tours begin at the gates of the reconstructed fort, 1001 E. Fifth St., Vancouver. Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will host its 23rd annual Young Artists Competition at 1 p.m. Jan. 8, as nine young musicians vying for scholarships and the opportunity to perform their winning pieces with the orchestra in April. Kiggins Theatre and Niche Wine Bar concludes its Niche Noir Nights series with “To Have or Have Not” at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., Vancouver. The film features Humphrey Bogart as an American expatriate who agrees to help a French Resistance leader and his wife, while romancing a lounge singer (Lauren Bacall).
