Weather Eye: Enjoy your Christmas as we move toward return to rainfall

Merry Christmas!

It sure didn’t look like we would get a white Christmas as I looked out the door while writing this column Saturday afternoon in Salmon Creek Saturday. There were a couple of light ice-pellet showers with a few snowflakes mixed in earlier that began to show a bit of white on the ground, but it melted quickly.

In Thursday’s column, we mentioned a chance of a few snowflakes and snow down to the foothills. The storm moved ever so slightly to our north and kept us on the warm side of things while Puget Sound had snow off and on all day Friday.

Today will be dry and chilly but only white if you are up over 1,000 to 2,000 feet. I would say that is the norm for Christmas Day. Rain returns Monday, and we will have off and on rain the next week or so. It’s possible we’ll get a wintry mix when rain arrives.

Here are rain reports from November, which was not as wet as the record month of October: Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 10.83 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 7.25 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 23.02 inches; Phil Delany, above Dole Valley, 15.40 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 6.70 inches; Pete Conrad, near Tukes Mountain, 10.39 inches; Merle Moore, 2 miles west of Yacolt, 12.89 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 6.53 inches; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 7.52 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 7.85 inches; Dave Campbell, 1 mile west of Heisson, 7.95 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 8.08 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 6.43 inches; Tom Dixon, Amboy, 13.76 inches; Irv St. Germain, Prune Hill, 5.93 inches; Chuck Houghton, Hockinson Heights, 10.37 inches; and Roland Dersken, Vancouver, B.C., 10.20 inches. The official rainfall for our Vancouver was 6.88 inches, 0.97 of an inch above average.
