Letter: Media platform does more harm

In response to Editor Lou Brancaccio’s Jan. 23 column, “Benton’s looking over his shoulder,” what a shame that journalism has become solely a platform for opinion, politics and mud-slinging. It’s quite clear that Brancaccio is no fan of Don Benton, but too many who read his vitriol gain their opinion from him rather than facts. And the facts are that Benton has done more good for his state and county than Brancaccio is willing to give him credit.

A man who is working two jobs just might require more than eight hours a day to do those jobs, and telecommuting is a practical modern solution. I find it reprehensible that Benton’s county boss, Mark McCauley, would share his letter to Benton with Brancaccio. Isn’t that some sort of ethical misdemeanor? Perhaps he should have shared his last job evaluation for Benton, as well; I think that would show a different picture.

Benton may not have a degree in environmental services but mainly his county job is managerial and he excels at that. It is clear to me, not only from this column but others Brancaccio has written, that in his frenzy to ruin this man he would say anything, regardless of truth, to gain that end. I hope readers are aware of this vendetta and take what Brancaccio says with a grain of salt.
