Save the Date: Football party, music, musicals entertaining variety

Ridgefield First Saturday’s Tailgate Party will celebrate a day of football from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today with activities, games, music and cooking demonstrations. Cooks can take the community chili challenge at noon, with the best pot of chili winning prizes at Ridgefield Overlook Park, Pioneer Street and Main Avenue. Singer-songwriter Corey Harper, a graduate of Columbia River High School, will be joined by Vancouver musician Dustin Ruth for a special Care Concert, benefiting Clark County Food Bank and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The event begins with a screening of the surf film “View From a Blue Moon,” followed by performances from The Man Franco, Harper and Ruth. The Portland Youth Philharmonic will present its Cadenza concert featuring the philharmonic’s conservatory orchestra and wind ensemble at 4 p.m. Feb. 14 at Skyview High School Concert Hall, 1300 N.W. 139th St., Vancouver. The concert includes Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 2: Little Russian” and a performance by the runner-up of the piano concerto competition. More than 80 Washougal High School students will bring “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” to the stage, as Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder and more try to bridge the gap between sea and land. The production features songs from the film and Broadway production. Journey Theater Arts Group goes for a musical classic with “Singin’ in the Rain,” set in the transformative era when silent pictures were giving way to talking films. The production includes favorite scenes and songs from the film, including an onstage rainstorm. Clark College Theatre takes on “Avenue Q,” the Tony Award-winning musical for mature audiences. This coming-of-age parable features puppets alongside human actors, poking fun at the anxieties and issues of entering adulthood.
