PORTLAND — An Oregon business that leases pets to people is under investigation by the state Department of Justice after complaints that the company unnecessarily euthanized dogs.

The Oregonian reports that the DOJ is investigating Hannah the Pet Society. Pet lovers called for an investigation into the company after a blog reported in January that Hannah had euthanized three dogs without what many believe was good cause.

Hannah provides food and health care for adopted pups in exchange for a monthly fee. And though the pets go live with their new family, Hannah retains ownership of the cat, dog or other animal and has a final say in all of its medical decisions.

Hannah chief executive Fred Wich says the three dogs had to be euthanized because they had bitten or attempted to bite humans.
