Letter: Downside to casino’s plan for waste

By
Published:

After reading about the proposed casino to be built in La Center, I was alarmed about the waste treatment plan. They are proposing to inject treated wastewater into the ground above Clark County’s source of water. I believe this treated waste will eventually leach into the aquifer that we drink from.

Here is the down side of this proposal: When the treatment system malfunctions, as they all do at some point in time, it could then inject raw sewage into the ground. The other issue is that no treatment system can remove 100 percent of a person’s medication that is passed into the system from their urine. Do we want this groundwater plume with treated waste and a toxic mix of medication sitting 120 to 220 feet above our aquifer with the possibility that it could eventually leach into it?
