Union wrestlers take Pacific Coast crown

Strassenberg, Rotondo claim individual titles

Tied in sudden death overtime, Tommy Strassenberg wasn’t just wrestling for himself on Saturday.

The hopes of his Union wrestling team hung with the junior at the Pacific Coast Championships at Mountain View.

Strassenberg scored a 3-2 overtime victory over Riley Fritsch of Blaine to capture the 160-pound division championship and propel the Titans to the team title on Saturday.

The win gave Union the team title with 173 points to edge out Dallas (Ore.) at 170.5.

Since returning from surgery, Strassenberg improved to 8-0 on the season with the victory.

Earlier in the championships round, junior Ethan Rotondo gave the Titans a shot at the team title when he beat Isaac Lopez of Burlington-Edision 17-4 to capture the 106-pound division title. Rotondo improved to 14-0 on the season.

Another Titan wrestler, JJ Talavera, earned a runner-up finish at 145 pounds, losing in the finals to Logan Pine of Olympia.

Senior Dallas Goodpaster of Evergreen won the 285-pound division with a 13-2 win over Cy Hicks of Tumwater.

Cameron Loos of Hockinson was the runner-up at 220 pounds, suffering his first loss of the season in the final to Brian Barnes of McMinnville, Ore., 8-5.

Will Taisacan of Mountain View was the runner-up at 113 pounds, losing to Nick Capetillo from Westview of Beaverton, Ore., 13-6.

Camas’ Rylan Thompson was the runner-up at 132 pounds, losing to Ian Carlos of North Salem (Ore.) 7-2 in the final.
