A Clark County jury on Thursday convicted a Vancouver man of burglary and robbery after he broke into an apartment and brandished a hammer and knife at the residents when they found him.

Roderick L. King-Pickett, 28, was found guilty in Clark County Superior Court of first-degree burglary and first-degree robbery, with a deadly weapon enhancement attached to each charge.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Vancouver police responded to a burglary at 2224 N.E. Bridgecreek Ave. at about 10:20 p.m. Sept. 4. The residents said they had returned home from dinner and saw their sliding glass door open. One of the residents, Michael Freeman-Lema, said he found a man sitting on his second-story balcony, so he closed the door on him and told him to leave.

The intruder, later identified as King-Pickett, forced the sliding glass door open and began to approach Freeman-Lema, who armed himself with a rifle and repeatedly told King-Pickett to leave, the affidavit said. King-Pickett was armed with a hammer and knife and lunged at Freeman-Lema, who retreated out the front door. Freeman-Lema then shot at him, court records said.

King-Pickett ran from the scene but was later apprehended near Northeast 87th Avenue and 10th Street, according to court documents. He had a white bag, which contained items that belonged to a second resident in the apartment, court records said.

During the trial, King-Pickett’s defense attorney, Diane Sweet, argued that her client was not involved in the burglary and robbery, and that the victims were unable to positively identify him as the intruder.

King-Pickett is scheduled to be sentenced Monday.
