Two people who were apparently sleeping in a trash bin outside a Salmon Creek shopping complex were reportedly injured Friday morning when a garbage truck showed up to compact and haul away the contents.

The truck driver had apparently picked up trash at a Safeway store before driving a few blocks to pick up trash at a Peet’s Coffee, 13307 N.E. Highway 99. While in transit, the driver compacted the trash he had just picked up, said Clark County Fire District 6 Battalion Chief Brian Johnson.

When he arrived at the coffee shop, the driver got out of the truck and heard screams from inside the truck, Johnson said. He called 911 just after 6 a.m.

Fire crews arrived and got on top of the truck’s trash compartment. A man in his 20s was able to climb out of the truck using a ladder, but a woman, also in her 20s, was trapped, Johnson said.

Fire crews were able to free the woman after about an hour and a half, Johnson said.

The people were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. Their names and conditions were not available.
