ASTORIA, Ore. — A mother accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter at a coastal Oregon resort will undergo further mental evaluation.

The Daily Astorian reports that Clatsop County Circuit Court Judge Cindee Matyas has ordered 42-year-old Jessica Smith to be independently evaluated by a state or private expert.

The defense expert says Smith, who briefly lived in Vancouver before her arrest, has severe mood changes and untreated mental health issues.

Matyas says she hasn’t observed any unusual behavior from Smith in court but that an evaluation is appropriate. The process could take up to 60 days.

A hearing scheduled for next month was postponed until April. The trial is scheduled for June.

Smith has pleaded not guilty to murder in the 2014 drowning death of her toddler and not guilty to attempted murder in the slashing of her teenager.
