Saint Martin’s University senior Shannon Porter was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after setting school and meet records in the 3,000 meters at Washington State’s WSU Indoor Open on Saturday.

The Hockinson High School graduate’s time was 10 minutes, 10.44 seconds.

She won by nearly six seconds, breaking the meet record of 10:15.95 set by Central Washington’s Katie Hummel in 2007.

Porter also smashed her own school record in the event by more than 19 seconds. Her previous standard was 10:29.64.

Porter currently sits sixth on the GNAC top-times list and is 24th overall this season in NCAA Division II.

Speaking of Porter and SMU teammate Mikel Smith, who won the high jump and was named GNAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, Saints coach Jim Brewer told the website smusaints.com: “Both Mikel and Shannon put in the work over Christmas break, and it showed this weekend at the WSU Open. We are planning on great things happening this year.”
