‘Castle,’ ‘Odd Couple,’ ‘Nashville’ all returning

You have questions. I have some answers.

Will “Nashville” and “Castle,” both on ABC, be returning any time soon?

Yes. “Nashville” will be back on March 16. “Castle” resumes new episodes on Feb. 8. As I have said before, networks produce far fewer episodes of series than there are weeks in a TV season — and in most cases repeats do not do very well with audiences who catch episodes the first time around or avail themselves of online and on-demand replays. So series take breaks, and other shows are introduced, year-round, to keep happy the viewers wanting fresh programming.

On a similar note:

I don’t remember reading anywhere that “The Odd Couple” would not return for its second season. It hasn’t been on yet and I haven’t seen any information about the program. Was it canceled?

No. CBS has held it for later this year. The comedy starring Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon — and featuring Yvette Nicole Brown — is scheduled to return on April 7.

I saw that NBC had ordered 13 episodes of a reprised “Coach” series with Craig T. Nelson as Hayden Fox. I haven’t seen anything more about it. Is this still in the works?

NBC decided last year not to go ahead with the project. Deadline.com said the pilot for the new series felt dated to some of the decision makers and that “creative differences between NBC and the producers” killed the deal.

What happened to the young lady who played Kristin on earlier seasons of “Last Man Standing”? She played the part well.

The ABC sitcom went through a couple of cast changes after its first season. Alexandra Krosney, who played daughter Kristin, was dropped in favor of Amanda Fuller. Kristin’s son, Boyd, played by Luke and Evan Kruntchev during the first season, was recast with Flynn Morrison. Nick Jonas, who guest-starred as Boyd’s father, Ryan, in the first season, was replaced by Jordan Masterson.

Entertainment news site Zap2it noted that Fuller is older than Krosney and “the age difference afforded the show the opportunity to retool the family dynamic.” In the process, Boyd became a noticeably older child than in the first season. As for Ryan, Jonas’ availability was limited; when the show decided to expand the role, it recast with Masterson.

As a big fan of “Hawaii Five-0,” I have missed Scott Caan and the bantering between his Danny Williams character and that of Alex O’Loughlin’s Steve McGarrett. Why have the showrunners reduced the role?

Apparently because Caan asked them to. Last year he told Rob Owen of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he does five fewer episodes each season than O’Loughlin. Unlike some of the show’s stars and guests who have made themselves at home in Hawaii, Caan continues to live in Los Angeles. And I suspect that the number of episodes is kept flexible.

Caan has a daughter born in July 2014 and activities outside “Five-0” including a play he wrote, “The Trouble We Come From,” which was performed in Burbank in 2015. Doing fewer episodes means “I can come home to see my family and stuff.”
