Letter: Governor’s decision commended

By Sara Thorson, Vancouver
Published: July 5, 2016, 6:00am

As a physician, I am so grateful that Gov. Jay Inslee took action and called for a moratorium on oil trains traveling Union Pacific tracks that have not received rigorous inspections. Given the derailment disaster in Mosier, Ore., and the death 47 in Lac-Mégantic in July 2013, his actions are absolutely warranted.

Furthermore, Vancouver and communities sitting on all tracks between here and the oil fields must never be asked to assume extraordinary costs for the profit of a few big oil companies. When it’s time for his decision, our governor must deny Tesoro-Savage and other similar projects that put my patients and their families at risk. We can do better.
