OLYMPIA – The nine justices of the Washington Supreme Court have made history by appointing the first female clerk in state history.

Deputy Clerk Susan Carlson was sworn in last week by Chief Justice Barbara A. Madsen.

Ron Carpenter retired at the end of March after 10 years as clerk. Carlson is the state’s 9th Supreme Court Clerk.

The clerk position was created in 1934 to maintain the court’s records, files and documents.
