More apartments proposed for Washougal

Plans call for nine loft-style residences at mixed-use development

A mixed-used development that includes nine loft-style residences is slated for downtown Washougal. Early renderings done by architecture firm Brett Schulz call for a blue two-story building at 1911 Main St. Construction is targeted to start this fall, according to a preliminary application from Portland-based Guerilla Development.

Plans call for 1,950 square feet of retail space on the ground floor divvied among three spaces. Three residences would be on the ground floor and six on the second floor totalling 6,267 square feet. Initial drawings depict lofts between 613 and 753 square feet.

While nine residences may not sound like much, there are few rentals available in Washougal, a city of 15,560 people with a downtown that’s on the rise commercially. About 30 percent of Washougal residents rent.

Washougal-based Lone Wolf Development owns the vacant property at 1911 Main St., which is on the north side of Main Street. The proposed project includes a seven-stall parking lot in the back, which will be enclosed by a rock retaining wall, as well as three on-street parking spaces in front of the building.

The public comment period for the infill development ended last week. City staff don’t plan to make a decision on the project for several weeks, said planner Jessica Herceg.

If approved, this would become only the second multifamily project underway in Washougal. A couple of blocks east, at 2340 Main St., Washougal developer Robert Angelo has proposed building nearly 100 apartment units with a clubhouse and manager’s residence. That project got final site plan approval, but hasn’t yet obtained building permits, Herceg said. So far, it doesn’t appear any initial clearing of the property or excavation work has begun, she said.
