Letter: Trade deals keep secrets

Not long ago our government lost a trade dispute based on the fact that beef, chicken and pork products were labeled with “Product of U.S.A.” According to the rules of NAFTA it is forbidden to label these products with the country of origin. Our representatives, including Jaime Herrera Beutler, voted to comply and forbid the labeling of our food products (HR 2393).

We the consumers have no knowledge or control of the food safety regulations of other countries. We have no control over the food or drugs, the livestock are raised on or the contaminated water the fish swim in. We should be angry that our representatives protect the interests of corporations and flawed free-trade agreements over the safety of the American consumer.

Corporations try to confuse consumers by labeling the product “distributed by” followed by a U.S. company’s address. My former company, Nabisco, now known as “Mondelez,” uses this to fool U.S. consumers. They recently laid off hundreds of U.S workers and moved Oreo, Chips Ahoy and other products to Mexico. Please support U.S. workers and check the codes on the packages. Do not buy the product with the codes MM or SM.
