Letter: Open carry: Stupidity gone wild

The Columbian published a story concerning an individual, Mack Worley, who was arrested following his disobedience trespassing at Big Al’s (“Open-carry advocate sues city over arrest,” July 8).

He had an assault weapon slung over his shoulder. He said he was expressing his constitutional rights to open carry. His conviction has been overturned unfortunately as stupidity is not a crime. Worley has since moved to Kentucky, thank god. He has filed a lawsuit against the Vancouver Police Department.

All I can say is, what about my rights? I have the right not to be intimidated by someone carrying a weapon in public. In this day and age, with so many insane shootings and many of them with an assault weapon, my first response seeing someone with an exposed assault weapon would be: What are his intentions? Why should I have to make a life and death decision like that?

This is stupidity gone wild. Open carry laws need to be eliminated. They are extremely unfair to the average person just trying to live their lives without fear and intimidation. Unfortunately, the few have dominated the many with their abuse of Second Amendment rights.
