Weather Eye: Week will almost be a repeat of last week in this unusual summer

On Thursday, we cracked the 80-degree mark for only the third time this month. We reached 81 degrees on July 1 and 2, but otherwise, July has been mostly in the below average, comfortable 70s. On July 4, we barely reached 70 degrees. A cool July, yes.

We have another cool trough of low pressure off the coast that will bring periods of clouds and scattered showers over Washington and Oregon. Temperatures all week will be in the 70s with no 80s expected.

We could get lucky late in the week and hit 80. Looking ahead toward next weekend, forecast charts hint of yet another cool trough.

As the new low sets up shop off the coast, today the flow will turn southerly, and that usually destabilizes the atmosphere — and with a little heating and colder air aloft, we could see some thunderstorms break out later today and into Monday morning. It would be nice to have a good thunderstorm with a downpour of rain.

This summer has not really been what most folks were expecting with the early start we had in April, May and June with lots of 80s and even 90s. With July half over, let’s take a quick look at the month overall.

The average mean temperature is 65.6 degrees, 1.7 degrees below average. Rainfall is below average at 0.29 inch, 0.18 inch below average.

Summer is rolling along at a fast pace. We lose almost two minutes of daylight each day now. Stores are clearing summer items. Back-to-school supplies adorn the shelves. But of course, retail is always ahead of the weather and climate.

Enjoy your week, which will be almost a repeat of last week. We’ll chat on Tuesday.
